The transformation of healthcare in Kano State, over the past few years, has been driven by visionary leadership, innovation and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare reaches every citizen, especially the most vulnerable.
At the forefront of this transformation is Dr. Rahila Mukhtar, the Executive Secretary of Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KCHMA), whose bold reforms have redefined access to healthcare and positioned the state as a national model for inclusive health insurance.
One of Dr. Rahila Mukhtar’s most remarkable achievements is the introduction of the ‘Abba Care Initiative’ – a groundbreaking programme dedicated to people living with sickle cell disease.
This initiative, the first of its kind in Nigeria, provides comprehensive healthcare coverage and specialized medical services for sickle cell patients, significantly reducing the financial burden on affected families, while improving access to quality healthcare.
The programme has become a benchmark for other states seeking innovative approaches to caring for people living with sickle cell disease.
Under her leadership, KCHMA has also recorded unprecedented success in expanding health insurance coverage for vulnerable populations.
The state has surpassed federal enrollment targets and has emerged as one of the leading states in the country in enrolling vulnerable groups into the contributory healthcare scheme.
Thousands of pregnant women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities and economically disadvantaged citizens now have access to essential healthcare services without the fear of catastrophic medical expenses.
These remarkable milestones have been made possible through the visionary leadership and unwavering support of the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Through his people-centred ‘Kano First Agenda,’ Governor Yusuf has prioritized the health and wellbeing of the people, particularly vulnerable members of society.
His administration’s commitment to strengthening the health sector has enabled KCHMA to implement transformative programmes that are changing lives and setting new standards for healthcare delivery across the nation.
Today, Dr. Rahila Mukhtar stands as an icon of healthcare innovation, excellence and compassionate leadership.
Her dedication, strategic vision and commitment to public service, have transformed KCHMA into one of the nation’s most outstanding state health insurance agencies.
The achievements recorded under her stewardship continue to inspire confidence that the state is leading the way in delivering equitable, accessible and sustainable healthcare for all.
