The Kano State Educational Resources Directorate (KERD), under the Kano State Ministry of Education, has commenced a week-long in-house computer training for 60 members of staff as part of efforts to strengthen digital capacity and improve efficiency in the discharge of its official responsibilities.
The training is being conducted under the leadership of the Permanent Secretary of the Directorate, Hajiya Rabi Inuwa Hussain, in line with the ongoing transformation of KERD following its recent elevation from a department to a full-fledged directorate by the Kano State Government.
The development is part of the broader education-sector reforms being championed by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has been recognised for his commitment to education and often described as “Mr Education.”
The reforms are complemented by the leadership and contributions of the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, whose ministry oversees the Directorate and continues to support initiatives aimed at strengthening educational institutions and improving service delivery across the state.
The training is designed to equip KERD staff with practical skills in computer operations, documentation, data processing, communication and the effective use of other digital tools required for modern administrative and professional duties.
The initiative comes alongside the renovation and upgrading of KERD facilities, with the Directorate receiving modern equipment, including laptops and tablet computers, scanners, D.I. printing machines, photocopiers and CCTV cameras, to improve its operational capacity.
The week-long exercise is being coordinated by the Examination Coordinator, Alhaji Lawan Kibiya, with participants receiving practical, hands-on training on the effective use of computers and other digital facilities available to the Directorate.
Speaking during the training, the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Rabi Inuwa Hussain, said the exercise was designed to ensure that staff were fully prepared to operate effectively within a modern, technology-driven public service environment.
She explained that the transformation of KERD from a department into a directorate had expanded its responsibilities, making continuous professional development and the acquisition of new skills essential for effective service delivery.
She noted that the provision of modern equipment must be matched by competent personnel capable of using the facilities efficiently.
Hajiya Rabi urged the participants to take the training seriously and translate the knowledge acquired into improved performance, stressing that digital competence would enhance accuracy, speed, productivity and efficiency in the Directorate’s operations.
She also encouraged staff to embrace continuous learning and professional development, noting that the success of the ongoing transformation would depend not only on modern facilities but also on the competence, commitment and professionalism of the workforce.
The management of the Directorate explained that providing modern equipment alone would not produce the desired results unless personnel possessed the necessary skills to operate the facilities effectively.
It therefore described staff capacity development as a critical component of the ongoing transformation of KERD.
The initiative is expected to improve the quality and speed of documentation, data management, communication and other day-to-day operations, while enabling staff to adapt more effectively to modern methods of public service delivery.
The training forms part of the wider efforts of the Kano State Ministry of Education, under the leadership of Commissioner Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, to strengthen institutional capacity and improve educational administration in the state.
It also reflects the broader commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to investing in education, human capital development and modern public institutions, with the ultimate objective of building a more productive, digitally competent and efficient workforce capable of supporting Kano State’s development agenda.
