…Union members warn to desist from unrecognized, irrelevant titles
From Atiku Sarki, Abuja
The 2nd Sectoral National Delegates Conference of the Federal Civil Service Branch of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) is ongoing currently in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
The Conference, which is held at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Auditorium located in the Central Business District, is also expected to elect the new leadership that will carry out the activities and affairs of the Union in the next four years.
Declaring the Conference open, the National President of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Mazi Godwin Abumisi, observed that by the union constitution, both at the National, State or Sectoral Delegates Conference is a four-yearly ritual after which no elected leadership at whatever level in the union have legitimacy.
According to him, the basis of any form of legitimate authority in the union is the conduct of the Quadrennial Delegates Conference to seek a legal mandate for leadership from the members.
The National President of the Union noted that the election of the new leadership of the Union should have been held almost two and half years ago, but the forces of darkness, he said, could not allow it to hold.
He stressed that the challenges they had with a few elements in the Federal Civil Service branch was that some few people believed that the Union was private property, and they went to court, and the law spoke positively.
“It is better late than never. Therefore, this Delegates Conference should be held today, even though it ought to have been held earlier,” he said.
The National President of the Union of Pensioners, while wishing all the Delegates of the Federal Civil Service branch of the Union a very successful Congress, also warned them to desist from claiming leadership and going about with different unrecognized, irrelevant and selself-glorifiedles.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of FCSB, Comrade Fredrick Eguaoba, said since their inauguration as the caretaker committee of the Union in April this year, they have faced undaunted challenges from some of their members who only believed in themselves alone and no one else.
He said this set of people has continued to write a petition to the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Nigeria Labour Congress, among others.
He noted that despite all the challenges they faced, they were able to achieve their term of reference given to them by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.
Comrade Eguaoba, while appreciating the National President of the NUP and every other member of the NAC who allowed them to serve in the caretaker committee in the last six months, also thanked and gave gratitude to God almighty who stood before them for achieving the assignment successfully.
