From Joseph Asegba, Yola
The Federal Government has commissioned the first-ever 500-capacity barracks for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yola, Adamawa State.
The barracks will provide office and residential accommodation for officers, men, and women of the anti-narcotics agency.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to the welfare of NDLEA personnel, reinforcing their responsibility to combat drug abuse and trafficking with unwavering dedication.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), described the facility as a critical investment in human capital.
He noted that the project reflects President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to creating a secure and dignified environment for NDLEA officers and their families.
“The role of NDLEA in our society cannot be overstated,” Fagbemi said. “The fight against drug abuse is a fight for our nation’s future. This barracks is not just a place of residence; it is a fortress of resilience and a beacon of hope.”
He assured the NDLEA of his continued support, emphasizing that law enforcement officers must be empowered and protected to carry out their duties effectively.
“I urge the officers who will call this facility home to remain steadfast in their service to the nation. This investment in your welfare is a call to higher responsibility, requiring unwavering dedication,” he added.
The Minister acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari, under whose administration the project was approved, and commended President Bola Tinubu for ensuring its completion.
He also lauded Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for their contributions to the project’s success.
Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, highlighted the significance of the barracks, especially in providing security for NDLEA personnel.
“This year marks the 35th anniversary of NDLEA. For years, our officers faced security risks due to the lack of dedicated accommodation. Tragically, some personnel were tracked to their homes and murdered. This barracks provides much-needed safety and stability,” Marwa stated.
He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his continued support, noting that the facility, located on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, features modern office structures, residential units, and auxiliary facilities, including a state-of-the-art detention center, exhibit room, and operational pavilions.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri praised the initiative, emphasizing its role in strengthening the fight against illicit drugs. He noted that the project is not just about infrastructure but about reinforcing the nation’s commitment to a drug-free society.
In his remarks, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, represented by AIG Rex Dundun, reaffirmed the federal government’s dedication to equipping security agencies with the resources needed to succeed.
Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, and Hon. Abass Adigun, Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, also commended the project, stressing the need for continuous investment in NDLEA’s capacity and welfare.
Dignitaries present at the event included former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, members of the National Assembly from Adamawa State, and traditional rulers.
