From Ahmed Muhammed Danasabe, Lokoja
The Maigari of Lokoja, His Royal Majesty, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV, has called on the Federal Government to assign constitutional roles to traditional rulers, citing their closeness to the grassroots as a key reason.
He made this statement during a media chat with journalists on Wednesday as part of activities marking his one-year anniversary on the throne of his forefathers.
According to the monarch, his role as a traditional ruler places him in direct contact with the people, enabling him to gather firsthand information about their challenges before these issues reach the government.
He emphasized the need for traditional rulers to be entrusted with responsibilities that would improve the living standards of the masses, reiterating that they remain the custodians of the people’s culture and traditions.
Reflecting on his tenure, the Maigari described the role as a significant task but noted that his upbringing in a royal family prepared him for the responsibilities. Having learned from his grandfather and father, both former Maigaris, he has been able to unite and mobilize the people for development.
“Based on my experience, exposure, and the fact that I have worked in various places, the task of leading my people has been relatively manageable for me,” he stated.
He added, “To be a good leader, one must rise above religious and ethnic divides. Accepting everyone as my own has greatly aided my efforts to unite and develop the community.”
As part of his first anniversary, the Maigari revealed that he felt divinely inspired to visit health facilities within his domain. Rather than engaging in celebratory activities, he prioritized aiding the vulnerable by donating free medications, covering medical bills, and supporting patients in need.
“I witnessed distressing situations at the Federal Teaching Hospital,” he remarked, urging people to share what they have with the sick and needy to create a better society.
The monarch also praised the administration of Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo, commending its commitment to the welfare of the people. “Even the blind and the deaf can testify to the Governor’s dedication. Salaries and pensions are paid promptly, and the Governor is accessible to all,” he said, appealing to the Governor to maintain his good work and remain close to the people.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya M.D. Farouk, described the Maigari’s one year on the throne as eventful, noting the significant progress recorded in the area.
Similarly, Hon. Tijani Ebaya, Member Representing Lokoja 1 State Constituency in the House of Assembly, praised the Maigari for his unifying leadership and the developmental strides witnessed under his reign.
