Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has been honored as the African Governor of the Year for Good Governance at the 14th African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year 2025 ceremony in Casablanca, Morocco.
This recognition highlights his exceptional leadership in transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. Under his administration, Kano State has made remarkable progress, including allocating over 31% of the state budget to education, sponsoring postgraduate students abroad, and implementing technology-driven governance solutions.
Governor Yusuf, represented by his Special Adviser on State Affairs, Alhaji Usman Bala, dedicated the award to the people of Kano, emphasizing their role in driving progress. His governance reforms have also earned him other national and international accolades, including:
- Governor of the Year in Education (New Telegraph Newspapers)
- Most Pensioners-Friendly Governor (Nigeria Union of Pensioners)
- Teachers’ Friendly Governor of the Year (Nigeria Union of Teachers)
According to the ALM editorial board, Governor Yusuf exemplifies transformative leadership in Africa, positioning Kano State as a model of good governance.
During the event, his representatives participated in the Countries & State Governments Investment Opportunities Showcase, highlighting Kano’s potential in renewable energy, technology, and agribusiness.
The prestigious ceremony also honored other distinguished African leaders, including President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja of Uganda, and former Tanzanian President Dr. Jakaya Kikwete.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to ethical leadership, stating: “Good governance is the foundation of sustainable development. We will continue to uphold transparency, accountability, and policies that uplift our people.”
The Kano delegation to Morocco included Commissioner of Culture and Tourism Aisha Lawan Saji, Director General of Kano Investment Promotion Agency Nazir Halliru, Managing Director of Kano Agricultural Supply Company Kabir Sani Yakubu, and Director General of Media and Publicity Sunusi Bature DawakinTofa.
