From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto
Residents of Sokoto State have described Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s recent recruitment of 2,000 civil servants as a remarkable departure from the practices often associated with public sector employment.
According to them, the exercise was more than a routine recruitment process; it demonstrated that fairness, merit, and integrity can still prevail in governance when there is a genuine commitment to transparency.
They noted that in a country where public service recruitment is frequently linked to favouritism, political patronage, and backdoor arrangements, the exercise has come as a welcome development.
For years, many citizens have witnessed recruitment processes being used to reward political loyalists, associates, and family members, often at the expense of qualified candidates.
As a result, many young people became discouraged and disillusioned, believing that jobs had already been allocated before vacancies were publicly advertised.
Residents said Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s approach has renewed public confidence, particularly among young graduates from less privileged backgrounds who often feel excluded from government opportunities.
One resident described the exercise as a clear indication that the administration is committed to promoting merit and competence in public service.
“This recruitment exercise has sent a strong message that hard work, education, and competence matter more than political affiliation or social status,” the resident said.
They further noted that Sokoto State is fortunate to have a leader who understands the importance of building a capable and efficient workforce, stressing that the quality of civil servants plays a crucial role in shaping governance and service delivery.
A functional society, they argued, depends on competent teachers, administrators, healthcare workers, and other public servants who can effectively meet the needs of the people.
The transparency of the recruitment process has also been widely acknowledged, with many beneficiaries attesting to its fairness and credibility.
Observers pointed out that several successful applicants were believed to have supported opposition political parties, yet were employed solely on the basis of merit.
They described this as a significant demonstration of fairness and inclusiveness.
Many residents believe the recruitment exercise will be remembered as a defining moment in the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu, as it has restored hope among young people who had previously lost faith in government recruitment processes.
They added that those recruited today could become future leaders, carrying with them the memory of having been given an equal opportunity to serve.
The exercise, they said, presents an alternative model of leadership founded on service, fairness, accountability, and commitment to the common good.
For young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the message is clear: competence, hard work, and perseverance can still open doors to opportunity.
Residents therefore commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu for what they described as a strategic and selfless approach to governance.
“May his tenure continue to bring progress, prosperity, and lasting benefits to the people of Sokoto State,” Anas Tukur Balarabe concluded.
