From Musa Muhammad Kutama, Calabar
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a resilient soldier of democracy whose sacrifices were instrumental in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a statement issued to journalists in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, by her media aide, Alhaji AbdurRaheed Olarewaju Zubair, Edu said June 12 remains a historic milestone that marked a turning point in the nation’s march towards democratic governance.
“I join millions of Nigerians to remember and celebrate today — the day, 32 years ago — when we boldly and unapologetically expressed our preference for democracy by electing the late Chief MKO Abiola as President,” Edu said.
She congratulated Nigerians for keeping the flame of democracy alive for over three decades, praising their resilience, sacrifice, and courage.
“I particularly salute the far-sightedness of men and women of honour and valour, including our dear President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who endured indignities and discomfort to ensure that democracy was birthed and sustained in Nigeria,” she added.
Edu lauded President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals, tracing his journey from his pro-democracy activism with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) through the political movements of the AD, AC, ACN, and eventually, the formation and rise of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Mr. President is a resilient soldier of democracy and represents a refreshing dawn in our nation’s history. There is no doubt that President Tinubu laboured and sacrificed immensely for the enthronement of democracy in our country,” she stated.
Calling on Nigerians to draw lessons from the June 12 struggle, Edu cautioned against any notions of military rule, describing it as a threat to national progress.
“I urge all Nigerians to imbibe the lessons and gains of June 12. We must not be deceived by those who peddle the illusion of an alternative to democracy. Military rule will only be counterproductive. Power must remain with the people,” she said.
Edu further called for unity and support for the President’s administration, saying it represents a renewed hope for national transformation.
“We must re-dedicate ourselves to the ideals and goals of democracy and offer unwavering support to President Tinubu as he ushers in a new vista of renewed hope, with the long-term vision of reinventing Nigeria for the better,” she added.
