From Mustapha Saye, Kaduna
Health workers in Kaduna State have lauded Governor Uba Sani for approving the implementation of the 2024 Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and hazard allowance, effective September 2025.
The announcement was made during a press briefing in Kaduna by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Kaduna State chapter, Mr. Ishaku Yakubu.
Yakubu described the move as a major breakthrough for health workers, who, according to him, had endured years of neglect and broken promises under past administrations.
“This is quite commendable and timely because it is something we have been struggling to get for about three to four years,” Yakubu said. “At some points, we had to embark on warning strikes and even indefinite strike actions to press home our demands with the past government.”
He explained that the approval of CONHESS and hazard allowance would boost morale, reduce brain drain, and improve service delivery across public health facilities in the state.
“We urge the government to ensure prompt payment and sustained implementation of the allowances,” Yakubu added.
Observers note that the decision represents a policy shift from years of friction between the state government and health workers, who had staged multiple industrial actions over unpaid entitlements, poor welfare, and lack of adequate hazard allowances.
The new structure is expected to not only address long-standing grievances but also strengthen the state’s healthcare system.
