From Mustapha Saye, Kaduna
Religious leaders in Kaduna, Nigeria, have warned against a proposed nationwide strike scheduled for August 1-10, 2024, citing potential devastating consequences.
At a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at Arewa House, the leaders advised Nigerians to seek dialogue instead of protests.
The leaders pointed to examples of countries like Sudan, Venezuela, Yemen, and Syria, where protests led to loss of lives, displacement, and destruction of economic activities.
They urged Nigerians to explore alternative avenues for addressing issues, such as town hall meetings, youth empowerment, and investment in justice and equity.
The leaders also called on politicians to promote unity and avoid divisive language during the upcoming local government elections.
They emphasized the need for objective media reporting and encouraged religious leaders to stop preaching hatred.
The meeting was convened by the Arewa House Center for Research and Historical Documentation, Ahmadu Bello University, and was attended by stakeholders from various facets of society.
The leader’s warning comes as the country grapples with social challenges like hyperinflation, unemployment, and hunger.
