In a bold move to harness Nigeria’s creative economy for sustainable development, the Kano State Government has approved the hosting of a National Summit on Creative Industry Development, aimed at boosting the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and positioning Kano as a national creative hub.
The decision, announced in a statement on Monday by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, follows a proposal by the Kannywood Foundation, which highlighted Kano’s prominent role as the cultural and creative capital of Northern Nigeria.
The summit, described as a “strategic initiative” by the state government, will bring together stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond—including global platforms such as Netflix and Amazon, federal ministries and agencies, creative entrepreneurs, investors, and international development partners.
“This summit is not just an event, but a strategic initiative to position Kano State at the forefront of Nigeria’s creative economy,” Waiya said. “Kannywood, our indigenous film industry, and our world-renowned artisans are gaining the recognition they deserve.”
The event will explore how the creative sector—spanning film, music, fashion, literature, artisanal crafts, and digital content—can serve as a vehicle for economic diversification, youth employment, and innovation.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the establishment of a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) comprising stakeholders from government, private sector, creative industry associations, traditional institutions, and academia to ensure seamless planning and delivery of the summit.
The Commissioner emphasized that the initiative aligns with Governor Yusuf’s people-centered vision of economic transformation, youth empowerment, and cultural revival.
“We call on all stakeholders to support this historic initiative. It reflects our broader commitment to inclusive development, economic diversification, and the promotion of our cultural heritage,” Waiya added.
The summit is expected to be one of the largest gatherings focused on the creative economy in Northern Nigeria’s history.
