Civil servants in Katsina State have expressed frustration over delays and the stringent procedures adopted by the state government for staff promotions.
A cross-section of affected workers who spoke with Triumph said the situation is demoralizing and negatively impacts productivity and motivation.
One of the civil servants, Haruna Sule Shinkafi, revealed that he sat for a promotion examination in 2024 but has yet to receive any official notification of his promotion.
“I sat for the promotion exam last year. As I’m speaking to you, I haven’t received any promotion notification,” Haruna said.
He added that many other civil servants across various ministries and departments are experiencing similar challenges.
“We are not happy with the strict procedures adopted for promotions because they cause unnecessary delays in career progression,” he lamented.
Another civil servant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged favoritism in the selection process for the promotion exams. He claimed that some ministry heads submit only selected names while excluding other qualified candidates.
“The government may not be aware that not all names sent to the Office of the Head of Service are actually due for promotion. This creates serious dissatisfaction among staff,” he explained.
Efforts to reach the Katsina State Head of Service, Falalu Bawale, for comments were unsuccessful.
However, the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Muhtaru Abdu Rumah, confirmed that the union is aware of the complaints.
“We have received several complaints from civil servants and have already written a formal letter to the government. We are confident the government will take necessary steps to address the issues,” Rumah assured.
