From Muawuya Bala Idris, Katsina
The Katsina State Government has ordered the deployment of additional security operatives to Unguwan Mantau in Malumfashi Local Government Area, following a deadly attack that left 13 residents dead during morning prayers.
The Commissioner for Internal Security, Nasiru Muazu Danmusa, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the attack was a reprisal by criminal gangs against the community.
He explained that worshippers were observing the Fajr (dawn) prayer in a mosque when the assailants stormed the area and opened fire.
According to the commissioner, the attack followed an ambush staged by residents of Unguwan Mantau two days earlier, during which they killed several bandits, rescued kidnapped victims from Ruwan Sanyi village, and recovered three motorcycles and two AK-47 rifles.
“Security agencies are already on the ground in Unguwan Mantau to restore normalcy. The air component commander of the Forward Operating Base, Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Police Force have been deployed to clear the bandits, especially as they often hide under crops during the rainy season to perpetrate their evil acts,” the statement read.
Danmusa commended the courage of the community members in resisting the attackers and assured that government remained committed to supporting local security initiatives.
“As a government, we salute the gallant disposition of the people of Unguwan Mantau, and we are committed to fighting these bandits and ensuring safety across our communities,” he added.
The state government also condoled with the bereaved families and pledged sustained operations to eliminate criminal groups in the region.
