The Kano State Government has convened an emergency security council meeting following growing concerns over rising incidents of thuggery across Kano metropolis and increasing security threats in border communities linked to banditry activities in neighbouring states.
The high-level meeting brought together heads of major security agencies, including the police, military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Office of the Director-General, Special Services, and other critical stakeholders to review the evolving security situation and outline measures aimed at restoring peace and stability across the state.
In recent months, residents have expressed increasing concern over the activities of violent gangs popularly known as “Daba” operating in parts of Kano metropolis. Reports indicate cases of violent clashes, phone snatching, street attacks, theft, and other criminal activities disrupting social and commercial activities in affected communities.
Security concerns have also extended to border local government areas due to Kano State’s proximity to states such as Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna, where armed banditry and related criminal activities continue to pose serious security challenges.
Speaking after the meeting on behalf of security agencies, the Kano State Commissioner of Police assured residents that security operatives would take decisive action against criminal elements threatening peace and public safety in the state.
He warned that authorities would not tolerate acts of thuggery, banditry, or unlawful possession of weapons by any individual or group.
“We will take decisive steps against bandits and thugs. Anyone caught wielding weapons will be prosecuted according to the law,” the police commissioner stated.
The meeting also focused on strategies to strengthen surveillance operations, improve inter-agency collaboration, and enhance intelligence gathering in vulnerable communities across the state.
The development follows increasing calls from residents and community leaders for stronger security measures to curb criminal activities within Kano metropolis and prevent possible infiltration by armed groups operating across the North-West region.
Authorities further assured citizens that security agencies remain on high alert and have intensified operations aimed at maintaining law and order throughout the state.
