The Modibbo Adamawa University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, has successfully separated four-month-and-two-week-old male conjoined twins, marking another milestone in the hospital’s growing record of complex paediatric surgeries.
The delicate operation was led by Prof. Abubakar Auwal, a Professor of Paediatric Surgery and former Chief Medical Director of the hospital.
Auwal said the procedure, which lasted about three hours, represents the sixth successful separation of conjoined twins carried out by the hospital’s experienced surgical team.
“This is the sixth conjoined twins separation performed in this hospital by our team,” Auwal said.
He explained that the twins were joined at the abdominal region but were successfully separated following careful planning and coordination by the surgical team.
According to him, the hospital has continued to strengthen its capacity to handle complex paediatric cases through the availability of skilled personnel, modern equipment and institutional support.
“In this hospital, this is the sixth separation, though we have also handled similar procedures before, including cases in Maiduguri,” he said.
Auwal noted that the success of the surgery reflects the growing expertise of the hospital’s medical team in managing complicated surgical procedures involving children.
He added that the availability of necessary equipment and the collective efforts of medical personnel contributed significantly to the successful outcome of the operation.
The latest achievement further highlights the role of MAUTH as a major referral centre for specialised medical services in northeastern Nigeria, particularly in the management of complex paediatric surgical cases.
