The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has called on the National Assembly to enact legislation for the establishment of state police as part of efforts to strengthen security across the country.

This resolution was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting held on Saturday. The communiqué was read by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

According to him, “The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on enacting the legal framework necessary for its implementation.”

The Forum also resolved to enhance interstate border surveillance to effectively combat insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminality.

In addition, the Forum expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its ongoing efforts in addressing security challenges and infrastructural deficits across the country.

It further reaffirmed its commitment to fostering stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in tackling the nation’s security challenges.

The meeting was attended by the 19 Northern Governors as well as Chairmen of the Traditional Councils from the respective states.
