The Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over the resurgence of phone theft, phone snatching, and other social vices across the state, particularly within the Calabar metropolis.

The union raised the alarm during its monthly congress held at the Etim Bassey Press Centre, Calabar.

Speaking at the congress, the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Archibong Bassey, decried the increasing incidents of phone theft and snatching, describing the development as a growing security threat to residents and visitors.

He also expressed concern over the continued operation of commercial motorcycles on unauthorized routes within the city.

The NUJ called on security agencies in the state to intensify efforts to tackle the menace and address other emerging security challenges.

The union pledged to use its various media platforms to draw the attention of relevant authorities and the public to the issues.

The congress also highlighted concerns over multiple taxation and the alleged imposition of taxes on solar-powered businesses.

Members noted that many low-income earners were being compelled to pay taxes, sometimes by unauthorized revenue collectors.

Contributing to the discussion, Comrade Mike Akpang urged the congress to speak out against the indiscriminate establishment of gas stations and gas vending outlets across the state.

He noted that the gas explosion recorded in March was one incident too many and stressed the need for stricter regulation and enforcement of safety standards.

Similarly, the union drew attention to the worsening flood situation in Calabar.

Citing warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), members cautioned that the city could experience severe flooding during the rainy season if proactive measures were not taken by relevant authorities.

The NUJ therefore called on the state government and other stakeholders to urgently address these challenges in the interest of public safety, environmental sustainability, and the overall well-being of residents.
