From Christiana Gokyo, Jos
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the North Central zone has successfully elected new zonal executives in a peaceful and transparent congress held in Jos, Plateau State, with Mohammed Abdulrahman emerging as the new National Vice Chairman to lead the zone into the 2027 political contests.
The congress, which took place at Langfield Leisure Park, Jos, was widely applauded by observers and stakeholders for its orderly conduct and strict adherence to the PDP’s electoral guidelines. Most of the positions were filled unopposed, although due process of voting and counting was observed in all cases, in line with internal democratic principles.
The high-profile event attracted key stakeholders from across the zone, including former Senate Presidents, past and serving governors, members of the National and State Assemblies, former ministers, and other prominent party stalwarts.
Among those elected alongside Abdulrahman Mohammed were Orogu Francis, who emerged as Zonal Secretary, and Ndagana Alhasan, elected Zonal Youth Leader, along with several others who now constitute the new executive committee for the region.
In his acceptance speech, Abdulrahman expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, describing his emergence as a call to duty. He pledged to reposition the PDP in the North Central zone to achieve greater electoral victories.
“Our zone remains a stronghold of the PDP. We must build on this legacy and ensure we return to our winning ways. I call on all party members to rally behind the new leadership for the success of our party,” Abdulrahman said.
He also commended the Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for providing the leadership and enabling environment that ensured a peaceful and credible congress.
Governor Mutfwang, in his address, congratulated the newly elected executives and urged them to waste no time in reconciling differences within the party and uniting its members across the region.
“We want to congratulate all those elected today, whether by contest or consensus. Special appreciation goes to the electoral committee led by Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN, the local organizing committee headed by Senator Napoleon Bali AVM (rtd), and the Plateau State chapter of our great party,” the governor said.
He described the success of the congress as a testament to the unity, vitality, and democratic spirit of the PDP in the North Central zone, urging the new leadership to “hit the ground running.”
“Your first duty is reconciliation. Bring everyone on board. Let us form a strong, united front as we prepare for the 2027 general elections. Be assured of our continuous support in nurturing the party to meet the aspirations of Nigerians,” Mutfwang added.
Earlier, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan, the immediate past Vice Chairman of the zone, and Senator Napoleon Bali, Chairman of the Congress Local Organizing Committee, also emphasized the need for renewed commitment among party members.
“This is not just a change of leadership but a revival of our shared goal to reclaim political dominance in the North Central. Go back to your states and prepare. 2027 is closer than we think,” said Bali.
Delegates to the congress were drawn from the six North Central states—Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and Kogi—as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Many described the congress as a new chapter for the PDP in the zone, expressing optimism for a stronger and more united party machinery ahead of the next general elections.
