Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has declared that Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is not just a policy goal but a solemn promise to ensure every resident of the state can access affordable, quality, and timely healthcare without financial hardship.
Mutfwang gave the assurance on Tuesday while declaring open the 11th Plateau State Council on Health at Crispan Hotel, Jos. The council is themed “Repositioning the Plateau State Health System Towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).”
Highlighting strides made in the health sector, the governor noted improvements in expanding and equipping primary healthcare facilities, boosting enrollment in the Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA), and strengthening access to essential medicines.
He, however, acknowledged persisting challenges, including underserved rural communities, inequitable distribution and retention of health workers, and weak health data systems.
“These challenges call for honest reflection and decisive action. My administration remains committed to ensuring that health remains at the heart of Plateau’s development agenda,” Mutfwang said. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in building a resilient and inclusive health system.
“Let us rise to reposition the Plateau State health system—not just for today, but for generations to come,” he added.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, described the council as a platform for shaping transformative health policies.
“We are not just shaping policy—we are shaping lives. The decisions taken here will impact generations to come. Let us rise to this occasion with courage, collaboration, and clarity of purpose,” Ba’amlong stressed.
The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, represented by Dr. Omotosho Oyeole, also underscored the importance of UHC, emphasizing that achieving it requires a collective effort across government, health workers, and communities.
The 11th Plateau State Council on Health is expected to serve as a landmark gathering to chart a bold and sustainable path for the state’s healthcare system.
