From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto
The Federation of Sokoto State Students’ Associations (FOSSSA) has disclosed that the Sokoto State Government has paid about N3 billion in outstanding scholarship arrears inherited from the previous administration.
The outgoing President of the association, Yusuf Sabiu, popularly known as “No Revenge,” said the only outstanding scholarship payment is for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Sabiu made the disclosure on Monday in Sokoto during a press conference to mark the end of his tenure.
According to him, the non-payment of scholarship grants by the previous administration had negatively affected the education of Sokoto State students studying in institutions within Nigeria and abroad.
“That is now history, as the education-friendly administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu has cleared the liabilities owed to our members,” he said.
He commended the governor for ensuring the consistent payment of scholarship arrears to all eligible students from the state, both locally and internationally.
“The only outstanding payment is for the current 2025/2026 academic session, and we appreciate this gesture by Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
“All beneficiaries for the session have been verified, and payment is expected to commence soon,” he added.
Sabiu expressed gratitude to the governor for prioritising students’ welfare and appealed for the restoration of the financial support traditionally provided to the association’s leadership.
“We have nothing to say to the Governor except thank you. However, we appeal to him to restore the usual financial support for running the association for the incoming executives.
“We did not benefit from that support as previous executives did, but we appeal to our kind-hearted Governor to extend the gesture to our successors,” he said.
