From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto

Sokoto State Government has approved the general overhaul of its 40-year-old water treatment and supply facilities to enhance water supply across the state.

The General Manager of the Sokoto State Water Board, Engr. Aminu Haruna Mika’ilu, confirmed this, noting that the initiative by Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto is aimed at urgently restoring the board’s lost glory and enabling it to operate at its full installed capacity.

Mika’ilu also commended Governor Aliyu for approving the ongoing comprehensive rehabilitation of the State Water Board, with a view to upgrading and modernizing the system established over four decades ago.

He said, “If these projects are completed, the issue of water scarcity in Sokoto will soon be a thing of the past.”

He added that this is in addition to four new water supply projects embarked upon to boost water supply to Sokoto metropolis and its environs.

According to him, the initiative is part of the sustained efforts of the state government under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto to address the persistent water shortage in the fast-growing city and surrounding communities.

The General Manager listed the locations of the ongoing projects as Old Airport, Tamaje, Mana, and Rugar Liman.

He explained that the water supply projects at Old Airport and Tamaje each have an installed capacity of 150,000 gallons per day.

He further stated that the projects at Mana and Rugar Liman each have an installed capacity of 450,000 gallons per day.

“All these projects are ongoing and are being executed according to specification. They will soon be completed and fully powered.

“They will be linked to the main Sokoto water system to boost daily water output to the state capital and its surrounding settlements,” he said.

Engr. Mika’ilu added that the Runjin Sambo water station, which was previously vandalized, will also be rehabilitated by the state government.
