The Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, has launched the distribution of 20 motorized boats to riverine communities, emphasizing the importance of safety measures to prevent water accidents.
The initiative is part of the state’s efforts to address the recurrence of water mishaps, particularly during the rainy season.
Sokoto State has vast semi-arid areas where water transportation is essential, often relying on locally made canoes that pose risks of accidents.
Following the recommendations of the 2024 flood disaster committee, Governor Aliyu’s administration decided to provide motorized boats, life jackets, and relief materials to support affected communities.
The distribution ceremony marked the beginning of the boats’ deployment to ten local government areas, including Shagari, Silame, Wurno, Rabah, Isa, Sabon Birni, Goronyo, Kebbe, Tambuwal, and Wamakko.
Governor Aliyu warned boat captains and local government chairmen against overloading, a major cause of boat capsizing.
Muhammad Bello Sifawa, Secretary to the State Government,highlighted the administration’s commitment to improving the transport sector, extending benefits to rural dwellers.
Also,Aminu Liman Bodinga, Special Adviser, SEMA,appreciated Governor Aliyu for providing relief materials worth over N3 billion to support flood victims.
The Representatives of NEMA and National Inland Waterways Authority, Commended the Governor’s efforts in promoting lifesaving initiatives, economic activity, and search and rescue operations.
The Governor and other top officials officially commissioned the boats, symbolizing the state’s commitment to enhancing water transportation safety and supporting riverine communities.
