A group under the eagies of Sokoto Heritage Reloaded Initiative, have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immortalize Late President Shehu Shagari by renaming the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to Shehu Shagari Open University of Nigeria.
Professor, Uthman Abdulqadir, spoke on behalf of the group during a press conference held at NUJ Press Centre Sokoto on, Saturd,ay.
Abdulqadir recalls that it was during Shagari’s tenure that NOUN was first conceived, a revolutionary idea to democratize access to higher education.
Renaming NOUN after Shagari would be a fitting tribute to his legacy and enduring vision for an educated Nigeria.
The professor made a passionate appeal to the President, highlighting Shagari’s contributions to education and national development.
He noted that Shagari’s vision laid the groundwork for distance and open learning in Nigeria.
Abdulqadir urged President Tinubu to fulfill a national promise made by the Buhari administration to name a national monument after the late President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR.
Shagari’s leadership was marked by humility, integrity, and statesmanship.
Renaming NOUN after Shagari would not only honor his legacy but also demonstrate President Tinubu’s commitment to keeping promises and respecting national heroes.
The initiative is confident that the President will heed this noble call, upholding the values of humility, service, and patriotism that define the Nigerian spirit.
