The Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Dr. Murtala Musa, has described sports as a powerful and effective tool for curbing drug abuse among young people.
Dr. Musa made the remark during a courtesy visit to the Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), where he stressed the importance of strategic collaboration between the Commission and the agency in sensitising youths on the dangers associated with drug abuse.
According to him, the visit was aimed at strengthening partnerships and fostering joint efforts towards promoting a drug-free society through sports development and youth engagement initiatives.
He disclosed that the Commission is set to revive the Inter-Local Government Sports Competition, a flagship programme that will involve participants from all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State.
He noted that the competition would also serve as a platform for educating youths on the harmful effects of illicit drug use.
Dr. Musa commended the leadership of the NDLEA Kano State Command for the warm reception accorded to his delegation and urged young people to embrace sports as a pathway to self-development, wealth creation, and positive social engagement.
“Sports provide immense opportunities for youths to realise their potential, excel in their chosen careers, and become responsible and productive members of society,” he said.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commander of the NDLEA, Dahiru Lawan Yahya, explained that the agency’s mandate is built on key pillars, including the arrest and prosecution of drug offenders, preventive education and advocacy, as well as youth empowerment and community engagement.
He welcomed the Sports Commission’s initiative and assured the agency’s readiness to collaborate in the ongoing fight against drug abuse across the state.
The NDLEA Commander further called on youths to shun illicit substances and channel their energies into productive ventures that promote personal growth and contribute to societal development.
The visit highlights the commitment of both organisations to promoting healthy lifestyles, youth development, and a drug-free Kano State through sustained collaboration, institutional synergy, and public enlightenment campaigns.
