The Gaya Youth Democracy Supporters have reiterated their call for the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leadership to respect the outcome of the stakeholders’ consensus process in the Ajingi, Gaya and Albasu Federal Constituency.
The group urged party members and stakeholders across the constituency to remain calm and continue to uphold the rule of law following the recent consensus exercise.
In a statement issued in Kano and signed by its chairman, Musa Adamu Gaya, the group appealed to Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya to continue seeking redress through constitutional and democratic channels over the outcome of the exercise.
According to the statement, the stakeholders’ consensus held at the Kano State Government House produced Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya as the preferred aspirant after securing the majority of votes cast during the exercise.
The group alleged that the final outcome announced did not reflect the decision reached by stakeholders, describing the development as a departure from fairness and internal democratic principles.
It further claimed that the endorsement of the incumbent lawmaker contradicted provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution and guidelines governing consensus arrangements.
“The decision of the majority of stakeholders was disregarded, which amounts to a breach of fairness and justice,” the statement said.
The group also referenced recent remarks attributed to APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, stating that the party recognises only direct primaries and consensus arrangements, while ruling out automatic tickets for elected office holders.
According to the group, the matter goes beyond the ambition of Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya and concerns the collective interest of party members and residents across the three local government areas.
It stated that the Electoral Act 2026 permits political parties to adopt either direct primaries or consensus arrangements, provided all cleared aspirants agree to the process.
The statement disclosed that the consensus exercise recorded 55 votes from stakeholders across the constituency, with Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya polling 33 votes to emerge with majority support.
However, the group alleged that vested interests later influenced the process, thereby undermining equity and democratic values within the party.
Musa Adamu Gaya maintained that stakeholders were not informed of the governor’s position before the final announcement was made.
The group expressed confidence in the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms and reaffirmed its commitment to lawful and peaceful efforts aimed at ensuring that the will of the majority prevails.
