The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Markets, Hon. Abdurrahman Abubakar Gobirawa, has declared that no administration in the history of Kano State has invested more in the development and modernization of markets than the current government.
Gobirawa said Governor Yusuf’s administration has recorded unprecedented achievements in the commercial sector through massive investments in market infrastructure, security, sanitation, and business-friendly policies aimed at boosting trade and economic growth across the state.
Speaking during an interview in his office on Tuesday as the administration marks its third year in office, Gobirawa praised Governor Yusuf for what he described as a remarkable commitment to improving the welfare of traders and transforming Kano’s markets into modern commercial hubs.
According to him, the government has undertaken several projects to enhance market infrastructure and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
He disclosed that a modern gate was constructed at Beirut Market to improve security and regulate access, while Singer Market has been fenced and renovated as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade market facilities across the state.
Gobirawa further revealed that major markets, including Darki, Gezawa, and Yankaba, are currently undergoing redevelopment under the state’s market modernization programme.
He noted that the administration has also constructed and rehabilitated roads within and around key commercial centres to facilitate the movement of traders and goods, thereby stimulating economic activities.
According to him, government policies have simplified business operations, making it easier for traders to obtain business-related travel documents and conduct commercial transactions.
The SSA also announced plans by the state government to establish a world-class vegetable market in Kano that will meet international standards.
He added that farm centres in Gyadi-Gyadi, Tarauni, and other locations are being upgraded, while additional centres will be established to support agricultural production and marketing.
Gobirawa maintained that Governor Yusuf has demonstrated greater commitment to market and business development than any previous administration in Kano State.
Addressing concerns over congestion and flooding in some markets, he said the government has constructed culverts and drainage channels to ensure the free flow of water during the rainy season.
He added that the Ministry of Environment has intensified sanitation efforts through regular refuse evacuation and cleanliness campaigns across markets, resulting in a significant reduction in flooding incidents.
Gobirawa also assured traders of the cordial relationship between market stakeholders and the Kano State Government, describing it as key to the success of ongoing reforms.
On fire prevention measures, he said government officials routinely inspect markets during the harmattan season to ensure compliance with safety regulations, including the proper use of electrical installations and appliances.
While identifying leadership disputes as one of the challenges facing some markets, he emphasized that the government does not interfere in the selection of market leaders, allowing traders to democratically choose their representatives.
He called on traders and business owners to continue supporting the administration and praying for peace, prosperity, and the continued growth of commerce in Kano State.
