A tragic accident in Cross River State on Saturday, May 3, 2025, claimed the lives of four seminarians and left nine others injured.
The incident occurred at Ikwette community, located at the bottom of a hill near one of the state’s popular tourist destinations.
The victims, all seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Diocese, had just concluded a tour of the area led by a Reverend Father when their bus was involved in the fatal crash.
Thirteen individuals were aboard the vehicle at the time of the incident. Emergency responders, including Nigerian Army personnel stationed nearby, arrived swiftly at the scene to assist the victims and manage the situation.
In a statement issued shortly after the incident, the Cross River State Government expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the families.
“We acknowledge the tragic accident that occurred at Ikwette community on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
Authorities are continuing efforts to gather full information on the identities of those involved and to provide support to their families.
The government also announced plans to review safety protocols in the area. “Safety is our utmost priority in and around our tourist attractions,” it said. “We urge all visitors to prioritize safety, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and comply with all guidelines when visiting or leaving our sites.”
