As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, Kano State stands out as a beacon of development under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Barely two and a half years into his administration, Governor Yusuf has proven that leadership anchored on vision, empathy, and results can transform lives. His record so far makes a compelling case for why he deserves a second term to consolidate the gains already made.
Reviving Infrastructure for Growth
Kano’s roads had long suffered neglect, becoming a source of daily frustration for commuters, traders, and businesses. Governor Yusuf’s administration embarked on widespread renovation projects, bringing new life to inner-city routes and major highways. From linking communities to easing the flow of goods and services, these projects are not just about smoother rides but about boosting commerce and saving lives.
For instance, traders at Singer Market now speak of reduced transport costs due to better road access. Commercial drivers say fewer accidents occur where roads have been rehabilitated. This focus on infrastructure shows a governor attuned to the daily struggles of his people.
Lighting Up the State with Solar Streetlights
Kano has witnessed a transformation at night. The governor’s ambitious installation of solar-powered streetlights across the state has not only enhanced security but also opened up opportunities for a 24-hour economy.
Young entrepreneurs, food vendors, and small businesses now extend their activities into the evening, taking advantage of safer, brighter streets. Residents also report a decline in petty crime in well-lit areas. This bold investment in renewable energy positions Kano as a forward-looking state aligned with global sustainability goals.
₦800 Million Youth Empowerment Programme
Perhaps the most enduring legacy of Governor Yusuf’s first term is his deliberate investment in the future of Kano’s youth. With over ₦800 million flagged off for empowerment initiatives, thousands of young men and women are gaining access to training, tools, and capital.
In a state with one of the largest youth populations in Nigeria, this programme is not just about jobs—it is about hope, dignity, and a pathway away from crime and poverty. Beneficiaries have already started businesses ranging from fashion to agriculture, proving that with the right support, Kano’s youth can be engines of innovation and prosperity.
A Governor for the People
Governor Yusuf’s style of governance—consultative, transparent, and people-centered—has won him admiration across divides. His response to crises, such as the tragic death of young athletes in a road accident, has shown empathy and responsibility. His decision to prioritize education, healthcare, and empowerment reflects a leader who sees government as a tool for service, not self-interest.
Continuity for Consolidation
With just over two years in office, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has laid a strong foundation. But foundations alone cannot sustain a house. Kano needs continuity to consolidate these gains—more rehabilitated roads, more solar-powered streets, more empowered youth.
The case for a second term is therefore not about politics; it is about the progress of Kano. In a time when Nigerians crave leaders who deliver, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has earned the trust and confidence of his people.
Kano deserves continuity. Kano deserves consolidation. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf deserves two terms.
