Kano State has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling Tuberculosis as it joined the global community to commemorate World TB Day 2026, with health officials highlighting progress in diagnosis and treatment.
The Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said Kano remained one of the leading states in Nigeria’s fight against the disease through sustained interventions and public health strategies.
Speaking at the event, he described tuberculosis as a major public health concern, noting that the government had intensified efforts to curb its spread.
“Tuberculosis remains a serious health challenge, but we are scaling up interventions to prevent and control the disease across Kano State,” he said.
He identified persistent cough, excessive sweating and severe weight loss as common symptoms, warning that the disease is airborne and spreads easily if not properly managed.

The commissioner said the state government was strengthening healthcare infrastructure, including the renovation of Yada Kunya General Hospital, to improve access to treatment and patient care.
He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for prioritising the health sector.
“We appreciate the governor’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and supporting initiatives aimed at eliminating tuberculosis in the state,” he added.
Statistics presented at the event showed that 913 people were diagnosed with TB in Kano over the past year, with 720 successfully treated.

Development partners also donated mobile healthcare vehicles to enhance outreach services, particularly in underserved communities.
Health officials urged residents to seek prompt medical attention if they notice symptoms, stressing that early detection and treatment remain critical to ending the spread of the disease.
