The Yobe State Government has announced that local government elections for chairmen and councilors across the state’s 17 councils will hold on 6th June 2026.
The announcement was made by Mohammed Grema Nguru, Permanent Member 1 of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), during a stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu on Wednesday, aimed at preparing for the polls.
Nguru stated that Governor Mai Mala Buni has officially approved the elections. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with media professionals to ensure timely dissemination of crucial electoral information to voters across the state.
“The role of the media cannot be overemphasized; they are key partners in ensuring that every Yobian is well-informed about the electoral process,” he said.
On security arrangements, Nguru called for the support of security agencies to guarantee safety at polling units, adding, “We are committed to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections, but the cooperation of security agencies and stakeholders is essential to prevent disruptions.”
He further noted that political parties would receive election guidelines to ensure they nominate candidates of integrity and competence.
Nguru also outlined eligibility requirements for candidates: councilor aspirants must be at least 25 years old, while chairman candidates must be 30; all candidates must be residents of their communities, not bankrupt, and possess at least a school certificate or its equivalent. Security screenings will also be conducted.
Nomination form fees are set at ₦300,000 for chairmen, ₦250,000 for vice chairmen, and ₦200,000 for councilors.
The SIEC official concluded by urging all stakeholders to actively engage and support the electoral process, describing the upcoming elections as a historic opportunity to strengthen democracy in Yobe State.
