The 8 Division Nigerian Army has successfully concluded its 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition.
The exercise held from 13 to 16 April 2026 at the Giginya Military Cantonment, culminated in a closing ceremony at the Division Training School Obstacle Ground.
The competition featured a series of rigorous events designed to test the physical fitness, tactical proficiency and overall combat readiness of participating troops.
Over four days, young soldiers engaged in intensive drills and competitive military contests, including drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms, and obstacle crossing.
Participating formations included 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 8 Division Garrison, 48 Engineer Brigade, and 58 Signal Brigade, all drawn from the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
In his closing remarks, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Northwest) Operation FANSAN YAMMA Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, commended the participants for their dedication and commitment throughout the competition.
He emphasized the critical role of training in military professionalism, noting that younger personnel must recognize training as the core of military service.
He soldiers may train more than they engage in actual combat as continuous training ensures they can overcome any adversary.
He urged all personnel to take every aspect of their training seriously, as a significant portion of their careers would be devoted to continous preparation.
The GOC congratulated all participants, particularly those who distinguished themselves and the formations that emerged as the overall best and runners-up.
He encouraged all units to build on their performance, as another competition is upcoming.
At the conclusion of the event, 8 Division Garrison emerged as the overall winner with 590 points, followed by 1 Brigade in second place with 490 points and 58 Signal Brigade in third place with460 points.
The closing ceremony was attended by representatives from various security and paramilitary agencies.
Highlights included the obstacle crossing by troops,presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding formations and soldiers and group photographs to commemorate the occasion.
