The Kano State Government has commended all 44 local government chairmen for what it described as “superlative performance” in their first year in office, saying their achievements have set a new standard for grassroots governance in the state.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, made the commendation in a statement issued on Sunday to mark the chairmen’s first anniversary.
According to him, the local councils have recorded remarkable progress across critical sectors such as education, healthcare, water supply, sanitation, rural electrification, and road infrastructure since assuming office in October 2024.
He said the performance of the current council chairmen “surpasses the achievements of local government administrations in the previous eight years,” attributing their success to the policy direction and support provided by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“The state government has guided the council chairmen to focus on developmental priorities that directly impact citizens’ lives,” Tajo said.
“Their performance clearly reflects the administration’s vision of inclusive governance and equitable distribution of resources.”
The Commissioner explained that the state government’s continuous engagement with local councils has enhanced efficiency and accountability, ensuring that development projects reach rural communities.
He noted that the partnership between the state and local governments has resulted in visible improvements in public facilities, including rehabilitated schools, renovated secretariats, and expanded access to clean water in many rural areas.
Also speaking during the anniversary event, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano and Chairlady of Tudun Wada Local Government, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yeshe’u Soja, described the performance of the 44 LG chairmen as a reflection of “renewed dedication to grassroots service delivery.”
“Our efforts have yielded significant gains in the lives of our people,” she said.
“We remain committed to supporting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration in driving meaningful development that touches every household in Kano State.”
She reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with the state government to deepen the delivery of essential services and sustain ongoing rural transformation projects.
Observers say the statement by the Kano government underscores Governor Yusuf’s efforts to strengthen local governance and empower council administrations to take charge of community development initiatives.
The local council election that brought the current chairmen to office was held in October 2024, marking the first time in nearly a decade that all 44 LGAs in the state had elected executives through a democratically conducted poll.
