Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday stood as Wali (guardian) for Malam Haruna Bashir of Dorayi, who recently lost his wife and six children in the targeted family murder tragedy, as he remarried under the Kano State Government’s mass wedding programme.
The Governor’s gesture reflected his administration’s commitment to providing hope, compassion and support to citizens facing difficult circumstances, while reinforcing the values of social solidarity and family cohesion.
Malam Haruna Bashir was joined in matrimony with his bride, Rahinatu Jamilu Inusa, at the Central Mosque, Kano. His Royal Highness, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, stood as Wali for the bride.
The marriage was solemnised by the Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Muhammad Sani Zaharaddeen, with a dowry of ₦100,000.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, on Friday.
The ceremony formed part of the Kano State Government’s mass wedding programme for 1,500 couples drawn from the 44 Local Government Areas of the state, an initiative aimed at promoting family values, easing the financial burden of marriage and strengthening social harmony across Kano State.
Among other wedding ceremonies held simultaneously across the 44 Local Government of the state, Governor Yusuf and his Deputy, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, stood as representatives of the grooms, while the Emir of Kano represented the brides. Islamic scholars offered prayers and admonitions, urging the newly married couples to build their homes on the foundations of faith, love, mutual respect and understanding.
Among the dignitaries who witnessed the ceremony were the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim; the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Suleiman Wali Sani; members of the State Executive Council; district heads; and members of the Kano Emirate Council.
The mass wedding programme remains one of the flagship social welfare initiatives of the Kano State Government, designed to support prospective couples, promote responsible family life and strengthen the social fabric of communities across the state.
