The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., has expressed admiration for Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s 9-point agenda for Sokoto State.
Mr Mills made the commendation during a courtesy visit to Governor Aliyu at the Government House, Sokoto, on Thursday.
The ambassador noted that he was in Sokoto to engage with the governor on his priorities for the state.
“I have heard about and am impressed with the 9-point agenda the governor has outlined,” the envoy said. “It addresses key areas such as security, education, and youth empowerment, which are vital to the people of Sokoto.”
He also remarked on Sokoto State’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s religious and political landscape and expressed his interest in assessing the progress of U.S.-sponsored programs in the state.
In his remarks, Governor Ahmed Aliyu commended the U.S. Government for its impactful initiatives, particularly through USAID programs in healthcare, youth empowerment, education, and humanitarian affairs.
“Sokoto State has greatly benefited from your interventions, and we appeal for more support, Your Excellency,” the governor said.
He highlighted his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of the people of Sokoto through significant investments in infrastructure, healthcare delivery, water supply, education, and youth empowerment.
Governor Aliyu outlined the state’s strides in combating insecurity, including the distribution of 130 patrol vehicles to security agencies to enhance anti-banditry operations. Establishment of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps. Procurement of 40 patrol vehicles and 700 motorcycles for the corps. Provision of facilities to operationalize the Nigerian Air Force Base in Sokoto.
The governor also announced the restoration and upward review of monthly allowances for security personnel stationed at flashpoints in the state.
On the topic of state policing, Governor Aliyu revealed ongoing discussions between the federal and state governments to develop a framework for its implementation.
Governor Aliyu reflected on the #EndBadGovernance protests, acknowledging that while the initial intentions were noble, the movement was eventually hijacked by opposition groups and hoodlums, leading to widespread unrest.
Governor Aliyu thanked Ambassador Mills for his visit and wished him a successful tenure in Nigeria.
“Sokoto is grateful for your continued partnership and the commitment of the U.S. Government to improving the lives of our people,” the governor concluded.
