Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving Kano’s contingent returning from the National Sports Festival.
The devastating accident, which occurred along the Kano–Zaria expressway, claimed 22 lives—most of them young athletes—and left several others seriously injured.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Governor declared Monday, 2nd June 2025, a public holiday to allow citizens to mourn and sympathize with the bereaved families.
“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Kano State, we extend our heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate incident that befell our brave team members returning from the National Sports Festival,” the statement read.
The delegation included athletes, coaches, and officials who had proudly represented the state in various competitions.
Governor Yusuf, currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj operation, described the tragedy as a dark moment for the entire state. He called for calm, unity, and collective prayers during this period of grief.
“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news. We mourn with the families and share in their grief,” the Governor said.
He also assured that all necessary support would be extended to the injured victims and the families of the deceased.
The statement called on Imams, clerics, and all Muslims within and beyond Kano to offer prayers for the repose of the departed souls and for strength for their families to bear the loss.
