From Atiku Sarki, Abuja
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to preparations for the 2027 general elections while concluding arrangements for the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Prof. Amupitan gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja when he received a delegation of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) resident in Plateau State, led by Pius A. Akubo, SAN, who paid a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters to congratulate him on his appointment as INEC Chairman.
The INEC Chairman urged Nigerians, especially members of the legal profession, to continue supporting and praying for the Commission as it carries out its constitutional responsibilities ahead of upcoming elections.
He commended the National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides for their dedication and support, describing them as the “generals” behind the success of the Commission’s recent electoral activities.
Presenting a congratulatory card on behalf of the Plateau-based SANs, Akubo described Prof. Amupitan’s appointment as a historic achievement for the North-Central region and a significant milestone for Nigeria’s democracy.
He prayed for wisdom, divine guidance and protection for the INEC Chairman as he leads the Commission.
Responding, Prof. Amupitan expressed appreciation for the visit, describing the Plateau SANs as family members and recalling his professional ties with the legal community in the state.
He also paid tribute to senior advocates from Plateau State who have passed away, describing their contributions and absence as a great loss to the legal profession.
