Former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang’s recent comments have generated considerable public debate. As an elder statesman, many expected him to speak with wisdom, restraint, and a strong sense of responsibility.
However, his latest remarks have been perceived by many as emotional and partisan, raising questions about the role expected of leaders who have held high public office.
During Jang’s tenure as governor, Plateau State witnessed a series of crises that claimed the lives of many innocent citizens.
Rather than achieving lasting peace, the state experienced recurring conflicts with devastating consequences for communities across the region.
It is also important to emphasize that Plateau State belongs to all law-abiding residents, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or regional backgrounds.
Many people live in the state either by birth, destiny, or circumstances beyond their control, and they deserve equal rights, opportunities, and protection under the law.
Furthermore, public opposition to judicial decisions should be approached with caution.
Respect for court rulings remains a cornerstone of democracy and the rule of law. While citizens have the right to disagree with judgments, such disagreements should be expressed through legal and constitutional channels.
To illustrate this principle, if a child is born in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, or Germany, that child may enjoy certain citizenship or residency rights under the laws of those nations.
This reflects the reality that modern societies increasingly recognize rights that transcend ethnic or regional considerations.
At a time when Nigeria faces numerous social and political challenges, elder statesmen and political leaders should use their influence to promote unity, justice, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
The nation needs voices that bring people together rather than statements that deepen divisions or reinforce prejudice.
Ultimately, leadership is not only about holding office; it is also about setting an example that inspires harmony, respect for the law, and a shared commitment to the common good.
