The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Katsina state has called on the state government to restore 27. 5 per cent of teachers’ peculiar allowance suspended in 2011.
The chairperson of the Union, Rakiya Shehu Runka, in her Speech to mark World Teachers Day, said the restoration of the allowance will boost the morale of teachers.
Runka said the peculiar allowance is being enjoyed by teachers in other states with the expectation of teachers in Katsina.
She said the restoration of the allowance would allow teachers from the state to benefit like their counterparts in other states.
Runka, however, commended the state government for the recruitment of over 7,000 teachers for both primary and secondary schools.
According to her, the construction of new schools and renovation of dilapidated structures have assisted in an increase in student enrollment
Speaking earlier, the National President of NUT, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, called on state governors that are yet to implement the retirement age of teachers to do so without delay.
ln his goodwill message, NLC in Katsina, Usaini Hamsu Yanduna announced that a committee was set up to work for the implementation of a new minimum wage.
During the celebration, some teachers were honoured for their outstanding performance.
