The Kebbi State Government has launched 50 brand new 18-seater Toyota commercial buses to enhance transportation and reduce travel costs across various routes in Nigeria.
The buses were unveiled on Thursday at the newly reconstructed and remodeled motor park in Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking at the event, the Kebbi Political Leader, Alhaji Umar Faruk-Buro, said the initiative was aimed at improving the welfare of residents and providing affordable transport services to the people of the state.
He assured that the buses would soon commence operations for the benefit of all residents, irrespective of political, religious, or ethnic differences.
Faruk-Buro, however, expressed concern over criticisms from some quarters, noting that certain individuals had alleged that the buses were procured for campaign purposes rather than public service.
He clarified that the primary objective of the initiative was to support transport unions, bus drivers, and the general public.
The political leader urged drivers to remain honest, fair, and responsible in carrying out their duties to ensure effective service delivery.
He also advised transport unions to maintain close collaboration with security agencies, stressing the importance of screening passengers’ luggage before departure.
Faruk-Buro further warned drivers against picking up passengers outside designated motor parks to prevent security risks.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Bala Muhammad-Gagga, described the occasion as a memorable milestone for the state.
He commended Governor Nasir Idris for the initiative and described the remodeled motor park as one of the best in the country.
Muhammad-Gagga urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the buses and facilities for the collective good of the state.
He also assured that transport fares on the new buses would be subsidised compared to those charged by private operators, thereby making transportation more affordable for residents.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Physical Planning, Hon. Hayatu Bawa, expressed appreciation to the state government for the gesture. He called on users, particularly drivers, to ensure proper maintenance and responsible use of the vehicles.
