Kano State Government has concluded plans to ramp up power generation to a target of 200 Mega Watts to the Tiga and Challawa water treatment plants and industries across the state.
The Managing Director of Kano Hydro & Energy Department Company (KHEDCO), Engr. Umar Ibrahim Doguwa, announced the development while briefing journalists about the feats so far recorded in his office, on Monday.
It would be recalled that last Friday, the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) visited the state as part of plans to commence operations of the 10-megawatt Solar Power Plant in Kumbotso Local Government Area.
The plant, established by the Federal Government with a 15% share owned by the Kano State Government and a 5% share by Kumbotso LGA summing up to 25% for the State at large, aims to boost its share to 51% or secure full ownership.
He said: “This would give Kano State full control over staff employment and maintenance, enhancing commerce, the economy, and providing employment opportunities for the youth and women.”
Engr. Doguwa mentioned that the state government plans to collaborate with the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to revive closed industries affected by power supply issues.
“If electricity is supplied to the Chalawa and Tiga water treatment plants, as well as other industries in Kano State, it will solve water scarcity and support small industries,” Doguwa said.
He appreciated Governor Yusuf’s administration for policies aimed at improving the living standards of Kano citizens and called on residents to support the government and provide constructive advice to policymakers.
