To mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has granted an absolute pardon to 130 inmates at the Jos Correctional Centre, while commuting the death sentences of four other inmates to life imprisonment.
Governor Mutfwang disclosed this in his Independence Day message, saying the decision was taken after due consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and in accordance with the powers conferred on him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
The Governor urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of the country’s founding fathers by preserving Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He stressed that nation-building was a responsibility passed from one generation to another, adding that every citizen had a role to play in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous country.
Mutfwang reaffirmed that Nigeria’s strength lies in the collective determination of its citizens to rise above their differences and build a nation where everyone has a sense of belonging and an opportunity to fulfil their aspirations.
Joining political associates, friends, well-wishers and patriotic Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to mark the 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, the Governor described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since independence and honour the sacrifices of past leaders.
