The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has presented a cheque of N18,652,908.20 to the family of a deceased employee who died in the line of duty, as part of death benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS).
Managing Director of the NSITF, Barr. Oluwaseun Faleye, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja, urging employers of labour across the country to subscribe to the scheme and fulfill their obligations to ensure that more families benefit from its provisions.
Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony, Faleye, who was represented by the Executive Director of Operations, Hon. Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, said the ECS provides a vital safety net for employees and their dependents and highlights the employer’s role in ensuring workplace protection.
“All responsible employers concerned about the welfare of their workers are key stakeholders in the success of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme,” he said.
Faleye stressed the importance of promoting safety practices in the workplace, minimizing risks of work-related injuries or diseases, and complying with reporting timelines for such incidents to avoid penalties.
He also encouraged employers to support injured or disabled staff by reassigning them to suitable roles within their organisations, while partnering with NSITF in creating awareness about the scheme’s benefits.
Commending the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria—the deceased’s employer—for its cooperation with the Fund, Faleye said the strong relationship between both organisations reflects a shared commitment to upholding the ideals of the ECS as enshrined in the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010.
He also praised NSITF staff and stakeholders for their dedication in delivering transparent, accessible, and efficient services to both public and private sector employers and employees.
“It is with great humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I present this cheque on behalf of NSITF. This is not just a routine exercise; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to social protection, compassion, and service,” he said.
He added, “Whether in cases of workplace injury, disability, or loss of life, our goal is to provide timely and dignified support. Today’s cheque is more than financial assistance—it is a token of solidarity and a symbol of collective responsibility.”
The deceased, according to the NSITF, was a staff member of Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria who died following a road traffic accident while returning from work.
