Lack of commitment by some parents to their children’s education has been identified as one of the factors responsible for poor academic performance in public schools.
The Principal of Ibrahim Galadima Junior Secondary School, Fagge, Hajiya Atika Aminu Abdullahi, made the observation during an interview shortly after the school’s second graduation ceremony held on its premises.
She said inadequate parental assessment of children’s academic performance, failure to monitor their school attendance and lack of supervision of lessons and homework at home were contributing to the declining performance of some students.
According to her, parents have an important role to play in complementing the efforts of teachers and government in ensuring that children receive quality education.
Hajiya Atika urged parents to regularly check their children’s lesson notes and books, monitor their academic progress and visit schools to interact with teachers and encourage them in their efforts to improve students’ performance.
She commended the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for its commitment to improving the education sector through the construction and renovation of schools, provision of furniture and learning materials, as well as school uniforms for students.
The principal described the commitment of the state government and local government councils to education as impressive, saying it should encourage all stakeholders to intensify their efforts towards improving the standard of education.
She further called on parents to sustain their support for government initiatives aimed at providing quality education for children across the state.
Hajiya Atika also condoled with the Kano State Government, Fagge Local Government and, particularly, the people of Fagge over the death of Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, after whom the school was named.
She described the late Galadima as a father and mentor who contributed significantly to the development of education and the community.
In his remarks, the Fagge Local Government Education Secretary, who was represented by a local government education personnel, Malam Auwal Muhammad, commended the teachers and students of the school for their impressive performances.
He described Ibrahim Galadima Junior Secondary School as one of the best-performing junior secondary schools in the area.
Malam Auwal also condoled with the people of Fagge Local Government Area over the death of Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, whom he described as a father and mentor who contributed immensely to the development of education in the area.
He congratulated the graduating students and advised them to remain disciplined and become good ambassadors of their school.
