…road linking Sokoto- Argungu in Kebbi State nearly cut off
From Umar Danladi Ado, Sokoto
Floods have affected over 300 houses in the international border town of illela in Sokoto State, leaving many people homeless.
The bridge that linked the two states of Sokoto and Argungu emirate in Kebbi State was nearly cut off.
Similarly, scores of people have been rendered homeless as their houses collapsed, and properties, including farm products and weres, were lost as flood water submerged homes and farmlands in the Southern part of Sanyinna town in the Tambuwal local government area on Sunday.
The most worrying issue is the flooded water, which was believed to be a result of an overflow of the Shagari earth dam, which is speedily on the increase.
The Sole Administrator of Illela Local Government Area in the State, Alhaji Sahabi Wakili, disclosed this when they received the state governor who paid a thank visit to the area.
Wakili appealed to the state government, led by Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, to assist the people of the area, as they are facing difficulties in finding shelter and are in dire need of help.
“The number of people to welcome you could have doubled if it because they were displaced by the flood. Your Excellency, we need a drainage system and a small dam to station the water.”
In response, Governor Ahmed Aliyu said the state government has set up a committee to assess the damage caused by the flood and will provide assistance to the victims
The committee, led by the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Bello Idris, will work with the local government Sole administrator to determine the level of assistance needed.
The Governor also announced the commencement of repairs on two major mosques and some roads linking the town with other communities.
An eyewitness account in the Sanyinna community revealed that people of the area have continued evacuating their belongings, including animals, from their collapsed houses for safety.
The public and motorists flying the route are therefore informed that the road between Argungu and Sokoto is currently impassable due to the collapse of a bridge at Sanyinna town that linked Sokoto and Argungu in Kebbi State.
