The Kano State Universal Basic Education Board, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, has organised a three-day capacity-building workshop for 260 head teachers aimed at strengthening school self-evaluation and improving the quality of basic education across the state.
The workshop, which drew participants from all the 44 Local Government Education Authorities in Kano State, is being held simultaneously at three centres—Rano, Bichi, and the SUBEB Special Training Centre at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso.
Participants include head teachers of primary schools, principals of upper basic schools, and heads of nomadic schools.
Speaking during a monitoring visit to the training venues, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Malam Yusuf Kabir, said the programme was critical to driving continuous improvement in school management and learning outcomes.
Kabir, who was represented by the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Malam Mu’azu Magaji, described School Self-Evaluation as a vital tool for identifying strengths and gaps in teaching, learning, and administration.
“School self-evaluation helps us understand what is working and what is not working in our schools. It enables evidence-based decision-making, accountability, and improved performance at all levels,” he said.
He noted that the training was designed to equip school heads with the skills needed to assess their schools objectively and implement corrective measures where necessary.
The SUBEB chairman urged participants to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge gained in their respective schools, stressing that the success of the programme depended largely on their commitment.
“I urge all participants to not only practise what they have learnt but also mentor other head teachers who could not attend, so that the impact of this training can reach every school in Kano State,” Kabir added.
He further explained that the workshop would help schools prepare for external inspections, promote quality assurance, encourage stakeholder participation, and ultimately improve pupils’ learning outcomes.
Some of the participants, who spoke to journalists, expressed readiness to implement the lessons learnt during the training to enhance leadership and accountability in their schools.
The capacity-building programme forms part of ongoing efforts by SUBEB and UBEC to strengthen school leadership and ensure sustainable improvement in basic education delivery across Kano State.
