Nigerian technocrat, Dr. Ibrahim Jalo Daudu Tafarkin Gombe, has called on the Federal Government to formally endorse United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed as Nigeria’s candidate for the office of UN Secretary-General when the tenure of António Guterres expires in January 2027.
Speaking on the forthcoming leadership transition at the United Nations, Tafarkin Gombe described Amina Mohammed as a highly qualified global leader with the experience, competence and international reputation needed to head the world body.
He noted that Amina Mohammed has served as the UN Deputy Secretary-General since 2017 and previously held key positions in both the Nigerian government and the United Nations, where she played a pivotal role in advancing global development initiatives.
According to him, Nigeria’s official endorsement of her candidacy would enhance the country’s diplomatic standing while providing Africa with a strong and credible opportunity to produce the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He urged the Federal Government to begin diplomatic consultations with African countries and other UN member states to build the broad international support required for a successful campaign.
Tafarkin Gombe said Amina Mohammed’s contributions to sustainable development, climate action, humanitarian response and global governance have earned her widespread respect within the international community.
He also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant stakeholders to unite behind her aspiration, stressing that a coordinated diplomatic campaign would significantly improve Nigeria’s chances of securing the prestigious position.
According to him, Amina Mohammed’s emergence as the next UN Secretary-General would mark a historic achievement for Nigeria and a significant milestone for Africa.
