In its efforts, the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee discharged a 70-year-old woman who spent 10 months in prison custody over defamation of character.
The woman identified as Saraya Salma from Filingo, Fufore LGA, was set free when the committee of Jail Delivery visited Yolde Pate Correctional Centre.
The gesture attracted emotions and celebrations from the woman and hundreds of other inmates at Yolde Pate Correctional Centre in Yola, Adamawa state.
The Chief Judge of the state and Chairman of the state jail Committee, Hon. Justice Hapsat Abdulrahaman, discharged the old woman when she appeared before the committee.
Out of her magnanimity, the CJ in her magnanimity doled out the amount of N12,000 to the woman for transport fare to her community and cautioned her against committing a crime.
During her appearance before the Committee, Salma confessed that she had had a misunderstanding with a man in the community whom she had accused of witchcraft.
Salma reiterates that “The man accused her of witchcraft and that she responded and called him a witch, saying that the man became provoked and went and sold bags of grains and dragged her to court.”
