The Chairman of Tarauni Local Government Council, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad Sekure, has launched a major environmental initiative to plant over 10,000 trees across the ten wards of the local government area.
The campaign, flagged off at Government Girls’ Secondary School, Unguwa Uku, is part of efforts to combat climate change, prevent desert encroachment, and improve environmental sanitation.
Speaking at the event, Alhaji Sekure said the exercise aligns with ongoing environmental protection policies of the Kano State Government, describing it as a crucial step toward promoting public health and sustainable development.
According to the Information Officer of the Council, Adamu Iliyasu Hotoro, the Chairman explained that tree planting “helps in reducing air pollution, controlling soil erosion, and promoting a healthier and more balanced environment.”
He assured that the initiative will be sustained annually, with plans to expand green coverage across all wards to ensure long-term environmental impact.
In separate remarks, the Councillor for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. Mubarak Umar Faruk, and the Head of Agriculture Department, Mallam Ado B. Dahiru, urged residents—particularly youths and students—to take ownership of the trees by nurturing and protecting them.
They noted that the trees will be planted in schools, mosques, and community spaces under traditional wards, where they will serve the broader public.
The Director of Personnel Management, Alhaji Tijjani Madaki Gulya, commended the Chairman for what he described as a “bold and visionary step” toward addressing local environmental challenges.
He also lauded the Kano State Government and the Ministry for Local Government Affairs, under the leadership of Alhaji Tajo Othman Zaura, for their continued commitment to tackling climate-related issues across the state.
