From Mu’azu Bala Idris, Katsina
The Katsina State Government has commenced the construction of 66 small-town water supply schemes across various communities in the state as part of efforts to improve access to safe and potable water.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda disclosed this while commissioning the Tsegeru Small Town Water Supply Scheme in Rimi Local Government Area.
He said the ongoing projects are designed to improve water supply in Katsina, Funtua, Baure, Kankara, Kafur, Daura, Charanchi, Batagarawa, and Faskari Local Government Areas.
According to the governor, 32 of the 66 water schemes have already been completed and are ready for commissioning.
Radda said the commissioning of the Tsegeru Water Supply Scheme reflects his administration’s commitment to ensuring communities have access to safe and adequate water.
“The water facility will improve access to potable water for households. It will also reduce the burden of water collection, particularly on women and children,” he said.
The governor noted that his administration has implemented several reforms and interventions in the water sector to strengthen water supply across the state.
These interventions include the monthly provision of diesel, quarterly supply of water treatment chemicals, and the supply and installation of pumps, motors, and gate valves across operational districts.
Other projects include the construction of a new pump house at the Ajiwa Water Treatment Plant, as well as the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Barhim Reservoir, among other initiatives.
Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in water infrastructure and urged benefiting communities to ensure the proper management and maintenance of the facilities.
“We must ensure the responsible use of water and safeguard these facilities for the benefit of present and future generations,” the governor emphasized.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mannir Ayuba Sullubawa, commended the state government for its sustained efforts to improve water supply across Katsina State.
He described the Tsegeru Water Supply Scheme as a significant step towards addressing the persistent water scarcity affecting communities in the area.
