The Arewa People’s Unity Association (APUA) has condemned what it described as the ethnic profiling and intimidation of Northerners residing in parts of Southern Nigeria, calling on the Federal Government to intervene urgently to prevent further tension.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 2, 2026, the association alleged that activities linked to Yoruba nation activist Sunday Igboho have contributed to the harassment and profiling of Northerners living in the South-West.
It warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could threaten national unity and peaceful coexistence.
The association also expressed concern over the demolition of structures and businesses at Alaba Rago in Lagos State under the state’s urban renewal programme.
According to APUA, many of those affected were long-time residents and business owners who suffered substantial losses following the exercise.
APUA appealed to the Lagos State Government to provide alternative locations for the displaced traders and compensate those whose businesses and properties were affected.
It said such measures would help ease the hardship faced by the victims and promote national cohesion.
The association maintained that while governments have the constitutional authority to undertake development and urban renewal projects, such actions should be implemented in accordance with the law and with due regard for the rights, dignity, and livelihoods of affected citizens.
Reaffirming its commitment to national development, APUA described itself as a non-political and non-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace, unity, justice, and harmonious coexistence among all Nigerians.
